Production Designer

Bachelor of Performing Arts in Design from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, 1994 and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Hons.) from the University of New South Wales, 1986. Peter won the Helpmann Award for Best Set Design in 2001, 2002 and 2004, The Green Room Award for Best Opera Design in 1998 and 2002, and The Green Room Award for Best Dance Design in 2005. In 1997 he won a Mike Walsh Travelling Fellowship and he was a finalist in the Pentagon Memorial International Design Competition (with Room 4.1.3) in 2002.

With Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Stephen Page, Peter has created over a dozen original new works. Of these, three received the Helpmann Award for Best Ballet or Dance Work* and 2 received the Helpmann Award for Best New Australian Work**.

Theatre design credits include: For Opera Australia: Sweeney Todd (Helpmann Award 2002, Green Room Award 2002), Simon Boccanegra, La Bohème and Madama Butterfly (Green Room Award 1998). For the Victorian Opera: Orpheus and Eurydice. For Sydney Theatre Company: Bloodland, Tot Mom, Woman in Mind, Victory, The Virgin Mim, The School for Scandal, Betrayal and The Jungle. For the Shakespeare Theatre, Washington DC: Hamlet, Richard III and Titus Andronicus. For Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company: Antony and Cleopatra. For Bangarra Dance Theatre: Fire *(2010) Mathinna* (2009), Boomerang (Green Room Award 2005), Unaipon (Helpmann Award 2004), Bush* (2004), Walkabout ** (2003), Skin** (2000), and Fish. For The Australian Ballet: Aesthetic Arrest, Amalgamate and Rite of Spring. For Sydney Dance Company and Shanghai City Dance (China): Mulan. For Gordon Frost Organisation+SEL : Man of La Mancha and Footloose.

Peter’s installation and arena credits include: For Global Creatures and BBC: Walking with Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular (THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement, 2008. For the Adelaide Festival of Arts 2004: Universal Playground. For the Asia Pacific Triennial festival of Contemporary Art 2007: Kin. For 1996 Atlanta Olympics Closing Ceremony: Sydney Handover (Co-designer). For the Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony: Awakenings (Helpmann Award 2001). For the Sydney 2003 Rugby World Cup : Avenue of Nations (Installation design). For the Sisters of St Joseph and Wintergreen Productions: Mary McKillop Museum (Exhibition design). And for The City of Sydney: Production designer of three New Year’s Eve Celebrations on and around the Harbour, including Millennium.
